The township of Maplewood is a quaint town known to draw in many who work or live in and around Manhattan but love the feeling of living in a village. Many commute to New York City by train. There are options to either walk, park at the train station (limited spots) or take a shuttle service to the station.
The four-square-mile township called Maplewood is a vision of sidewalks, parks, and tranquil streets lined with tall trees. Some say there are two downtowns, “the village” and the ever-emerging Springfield Avenue. The four-block downtown, known as “the village,” is filled with quaint, family owned shops, restaurants and a movie theater. Even the Kings Supermarket is more like a country store. Springfield Avenue is dotted with many more stores, restaurants and activities.
Maplewood, like West Orange, South Orange and Millburn/Short Hills, is situated close to the South Mountain Reservation – a 2,020 acre recreational preserve. It has six parks, an award-winning outdoor pool, a movie theater, the Maplewood Country Club, many restaurants, a vibrant arts community, and so much more.
The two towns of Maplewood and South Orange are interconnected in many ways. Amongst other things, they share a quality school system
- six elementary schools, two middle schools and Columbia High School. All are supported by active parent and teacher organizations.
Maplewood and South Orange have similar property stock. Both villages have an abundance of colonials, Arts and Crafts, tudors and Victorian style houses. Just like in West Orange, you can basically track the various neighborhoods by the grade schools: Jefferson (Jefferson-Marshall), South Mountain, Tuscan, Seth-Boyden and Clinton. Along Maplewood Avenue can be considered the center of town. To the west is Jefferson and South Mountain and to the east is Clinton, Seth-Boyden and Tuscan.
There are a couple of areas within these neighborhoods to note. One is Washington Park within South Mountain. You enter Washington Park through the stone pillars off of Ridgewood Road. It’s a small, enclosed enclave with upscale homes with period details and architectural highlights. Another is in the Tuscan area called Golf Island. This area is surrounded by the Maplewood Country Club. Many of the homes back to the golf course or can readily see the manicured views. This area is a few blocks from Maplewood Library and Memorial Field, too.
